The availability of wood and lack of metals have left their mark in Chiloé and this early church built in 1730 was constructed entirely of wood, using wooden pegs instead of nails. The German influence is the result of missionary work carried out by Bavarian Jesuits. The island maintains its traditional culture of wood - carpenters on the coast here still build wooden boats.
