The indigenous Tayrona people

Tayrona was the main group populating the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta when European conquisadores arrived in 1500. These pre-colonial indigenous were skilled metallurgists, artisans and agriculturalists. The conquest caused considerable reduction in population and many tribes moved to higher land where Spanish armies and missionaries couldn't reach them. We were lucky enough to see one walking down the street in his white tunic.
