Thankfully managed to get the only bus heading south out of Santiago. A journey that normally takes 8-9 hours took 14 as the bus had to bypass damaged roads and go through small towns where I saw many houses reduced to a pile of rubble.

Gosh that's scary - I've a friend (Kati, the ex Spanish assistant from my department) who lives in Santiago - she has emailed to say she and her family are OK. Look after yourself, Suz xxx
