Huerquehue National Park
The Lake District is one of Chile's most beautiful regions with some 12 lakes of varying sizes, as well as imposing waterfalls and snow-capped volcanoes. This park located in the foothills of the Andes 35k outside Pucòn is one of the oldest protected wild areas in the country. 'Huerquehue' means 'The Messenger's Place' and the park comprises steep hills and at least 20 lakes. You can see smoke coming out of the top of Volcàn Villarrica - with the way things are going here at the moment, I've decided not to climb to the summit with ice axe and crampons...just in case it decides to blow. You're also told to be aware of sulphur fumes at the top - I'd had my share of noxious gases in Potosi.
