Founded in 1538 as La Plata, Sucre adopted its present name in 1825 in honour of the 2nd president of the new republic. It was the capital of the republic from 1825-1899 but lost this role to La Paz after a civil war. It's now the constitutional rather than the historical capital and is sometimes referred to as La Cuidad Blanca (White City) owing to the tradition that all buildings in the centre are painted in their originial colonial white. In 1991, UNESCO declared the city a World Cultural Heritage Site.
